Indications for use

Medical IVDD Treatment (Support and Decompression)

Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD) is the most common neurologic disease seen in dogs, affecting 2% of the population with 85% occurring in the thoracolumbar section of the spinal column. Although it can occur in any breed, the more common breeds affected have longer backs and include Dachshunds, Shih-tzu and Pekinese. It is caused by disk material entering the spinal canal, usually through trauma (jumping off furniture) causing pressure directly to the spinal cord and its surrounding structures. Advanced imaging (CT, MRI, or Myelogram) is needed to confirm the exact location of the herniation, but survey radiographic films with a good physical and neurologic exam can help identify the injured site. Calcified disks and/or narrowed intervertebral joint spaces are common survey film findings. The pressure caused by the disk material can occur suddenly or gradually and cause anything from mild pain to complete paralysis. Immediate, aggressive treatment is recommended if limb function has been lost. Surgery is the preferred treatment for this disease, but many times is not feasible, so medical management with strict rest must be initiated. The MB Spinal Brace is recommended as an addition to all IVDD medical treatment plans!!

Medical spinal fracture treatment

Spinal fractures are usually a result of trauma and may or may not directly involve the spinal cord or nerve roots, but are extremely dangerous. Radiographs, CT scans, or other advanced imaging is needed to diagnose and evaluate the extent of any spinal fractures. Most fractures are treated surgically, but a few times surgery is not recommended or feasible for several reasons. Before the MB Spinal Brace, strict cage rest was our only option to keep the back “stable”. With the introduction of the brace, we now have a means of stabilizing the spinal column medically to allow spinal fractures to heal more safely!!

Medical spinal instability treatment

There are several pets that are born or develop instabilities in their spinal columns. Spinal instabilities cause severe pain and discomfort and if severe enough ataxia and paralysis. In young to middle aged pets they are mainly caused by intervertebral disk herniations and/or boney malformations on a narrowed spinal canal and as pets get older severe spondylosis (spinal arthritis) can cause similar problems. Radiographs, CT scans and myelograms are the most common imaging techniques to evaluate dogs with spinal instabilities. Treatment ranges from surgery for the more severe cases to strict rest for the mild cases. The MB Spinal Brace offers another management option providing support to the unstable spine!!

Pre and post-surgical spine support

For most spinal injuries, surgery is strongly recommended and performed to get pets back on their feet and walking. Most surgeries on the spine are not performed by General Practitioners, and are referred to Specialty Centers for care. With any spinal injury requiring surgery, pre and post-surgical support will aid in the short and long term healing process of the pet. Because most pets undergoing surgery have some sort of travel time to a specialty center, spinal support during this time is crucial in their successful outcome. The MB Spinal Brace is a great addition to any surgical spinal case to be used before and after the procedure!!
